Statement on Lapu Lapu Day Tragedy

April 28th, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the Popular Democracy Movement extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims and families affected by the Lapu Lapu Day tragedy which took place in Vancouver on April 26, as well as to the Filipino community at large as they grieve and process this horrific incident. We further express our solidarity, and complete support for the demands of Anakbayan BC in their call for a full investigation, as well as for swift justice and institutional assistance for the victims.

At the time of writing, a final conclusion regarding the motives of the attacker have not been made public. However, police have stated that the individual in question was known to them, and had had multiple interactions with them and with mental health workers. For this reason, the PM renews its call for increased funding for mental health supports as an urgent priority for the safety, health, and wellbeing of our communities.
