Popular Democracy Movement Demands Immediate End to Israeli Aggression
The Popular Democracy Movement condemns in the harshest terms the so-called "preemptive" strikes on Iran recently launched by Israel. Far from self-defence, these unprovoked attacks carried out with the full knowledge and complicity of the United States are an act of imperialist aggression which pose catastrophic risks to regional, and even global peace and stability. The rhetoric from Washington clearly indicates that this assault is intended to put pressure on Iran to submit to unfavourable terms in the leadup to the sixth round of nuclear talks, with Trump warning Iran to "sign a deal before it's too late.”
It is worth emphasizing that even US intelligence has clearly indicated that Iran has no nuclear weapons program. The baseless claim that this reckless military gambit is aimed at preventing the use of nuclear weapons by Iran is without a trace of evidence. Israel's attack on Iran is unjustified and incredibly dangerous, and Iran is meanwhile well within its legal rights under international law to defend itself.
The Central Executive Committee of the PDM therefore calls for an immediate end to Israeli aggression, and for peace and anti-war activists to act now to prevent further escalation and potential Canadian involvement. Canada's rising military spending must be halted and reversed if we are to prevent a greater disaster. Israel's flagrant violations of international law, its unchecked aggression in the region, and its blatant genocidal policies against the Palestinian people leave any further delay by Canada in cutting all political and economic ties altogether indefensible and unacceptable.
