Joint Statement: South African Solidarity Union of Venezuela & the Popular Democracy Movement of Canada
August 18, 2025
Following a meeting of the South African Solidarity Union of Venezuela (SASUVE) and the Popular Democracy Movement of Canada (PDM), and based on our shared commitment to the collective struggle against the reactionary forces of imperialism and neocolonialism, we declare the following:
This initial meeting, attended by the leadership of both SASUVE and the PDM represents the formal establishment of bilateral relations between our respective organisations, and lays the foundation for a relationship based on mutual respect, friendship between nations; a desire to increase our understanding of the social, political, and economic situations in our respective countries; and future meetings to be held semi-annually, or more frequently as necessary.
We share common principles in recognising the urgency and importance of the broad unity of progressive forces in the face of the world imperialist system which threatens peace, stability, and common prosperity across the globe.
We also share beliefs in the importance of razor sharp analysis of objective material conditions, and the necessity of translating revolutionary theory in a way which is effective, understandable, and palatable in the unique conditions of each country.
We further recognise the importance of historical memory, culture, and in particular, the struggles faced by Indigenous peoples in Africa, Canada, and elsewhere, and commit to the sharing of knowledge and cultural exchange to help strengthen our actions in solidarity with Indigenous movements.
In keeping with the above, we state as our goal the exchange of culture and education through in-person meetings in our respective countries and elsewhere, and through such exchanges to help educate progressive forces internationally.
We promise to act together in solidarity in support of our shared objectives, and in the support of all progressive, revolutionary, antifascist, anti-colonial, and anti-imperialist movements, and also to share information regarding international projects in keeping with our shared beiefs.
Finally, we declare our hope that the friendship, partnership, and solidarity between our organisations may serve as inspiration to other organisations who share in our principles and goals as we strive for a more just and peaceful society.
