No to War on Iran: Demand Support for International Law & Peaceful Diplomacy
March 3, 2026
On February 28th, the United States and Israel began an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran which since then, has led to the deaths of hundreds of Iranians, many of them civilians, including children. This reckless illegal assault in yet another violation of the UN Charter by the war criminals Trump and Netanyahu poses an urgent and calamitous risk of escalation into not only a broader regional war, but potentially a third World War as has been noted by officials representing major world powers.
US imperialism is acting with increasingly erratic and dangerous measures as it grasps at the ever more tattered shreds of its failing hegemony. At the same time, the rhetoric coming from the pedophile president has grown more detached than ever from reality, as is demonstrated in claims that the strikes on US bases and in Israel by Iran were “unprovoked.” After years of illegal, unilateral sanctions; a surprise attack in the middle of negotiations, which led to the death of Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeni, as well as hundreds of Iranians; and US calls for Iranians to ‘overthrow their government,’ Iran’s response has been anything but “unprovoked.” Under international law, Iran has every right to defend itself against foreign aggression and attacks against its sovereignty.
At the same time, it is the right of the Iranian people to choose their own government and determine their own future, including in their struggle against a repressive theocratic regime. But the just grievances of the Iranian working class must not be allowed to be manipulated as a weapon in advancing the interests of US imperialism, which has never brought greater democratic participation or increased standards of living to its victims. The bombs and sanctions of imperialism promise only intensified exploitation and a puppet dictatorship under a long deposed monarchy. The United States has no qualms with supporting genocidal theocracies like Israel or brutal monarchies such as Saudi Arabia, so long as they remain subservient to US interests.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has shattered any illusions regarding the sincerity of his speech at Davos earlier this year, declaring unconditional support for the US-Israeli attacks. Carney has refused to rule out Canadian participation in the conflict, and it is likely that Canadians were already involved in planning the initial assault. The Central Executive Committee of the PDM condemns this shameful hypocrisy and calls on the Canadian government to reverse its position and act instead in the defence of international law and the sovereignty of UN member states.
2026 has from its outset demonstrated a rapidly shifting geopolitical situation and deteriorating global order. Canada has continued to remain selective in which states’ sovereignty it voices support for, and in so doing has only contributed to the weakening of multilateralism and peaceful diplomacy. Canadians cannot afford for their government to continue to play both sides. If Canada’s future is to remain independent and sovereign, it must stand shoulder to shoulder with all countries facing imperialist aggression. Therefore, we repeat our call for Canada to immediately withdraw from NATO to avoid being drawn into a global conflict, and instead pursue an independent foreign policy based on peaceful diplomacy and multilateralism.
