Prime Minister Carney, Uphold Your Words at Davos:Stand with Cuba Against US State Terror
Feb. 19, 2026
The Popular Democracy Movement expresses its complete solidarity with the Cuban people in the face of the latest escalations in economic warfare imposed by the Trump regime, and calls on the Canadian government to take immediate measures to provide oil, humanitarian aid, and restore flights to Cuba to support its vital tourist industry.
In January of this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke of the need to guarantee “sovereignty, territorial integrity, the prohibition of the use of force, except when consistent with the UN Charter, and respect for human rights," in a speech which resonated with many working-class Canadians across the country. If these words are to have real meaning, now is the time to transform them into definite action and to take a defiant stand against the flagrant violations of the UN Charter and international law being carried out by the United States against Cuba.
Year after year, the UN has voted overwhelmingly to end the illegal blockade on the Cuban people, which has cost the country billions, and now threatens the lives of countless Cubans in hospitals which are imminently running out of fuel. Canada must uphold an independent foreign policy which reflects the principles outlined by Prime Minister Carney or bend ever further to the dictates of increasingly volatile American imperialism as it struggles to maintain hegemony.
Canadians represent the largest source of tourism in Cuba, and Canada is the second largest source of foreign investment for the country. Throughout the history of the Cold War, Canadian governments never gave in to US pressure to impose sanctions and economic embargoes against Cuba, with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau even visiting Havana in 1976. The PDM salutes the commendable solidarity statements published by Canadian unions, including the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Canadian Federation of Nurses Union (CFNU), and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), which clearly demonstrate the broad support of Canadian workers for Cuba.
Since the Cuban Revolution, Cuba has stood out as a source of hope for humanity, providing healthcare, education, and opportunities for its people despite being faced with the longest economic blockade in human history. Cuba has stood in solidarity with oppressed peoples across the globe, helping to liberate colonised peoples in Africa, leading to the collapse of the fascist regime in Portugal; granting scholarships to train doctors and scientists from the global south; and sending aid and international medical brigades to countries most in need. In the centenary year of his birth, we are reminded of the words of Commandante Fidel Castro, who rightly said:
“Our country does not drop bombs on other peoples, nor does it send thousands of planes to bomb cities; our country does not possess nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, or biological weapons. Our country's tens of thousands of scientists and doctors have been educated in the idea of saving lives.”
Cuba has never posed a threat to the people of the United States, nor to the working classes of any country around the world. The Trump regime is punishing Cuba simply for having dared to cast off the shackles of imperialism and assert its right to self-determination and sovereignty. From the beginning of Trump’s most recent Presidential term, the appointment of the gusano Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, and finally the attacks on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the PDM has clearly articulated its analysis that the Trump regime was moving to suffocate Cuba, and extinguish the light of socialism which has resisted for so many decades. If successful, the consequences for socialist movements in Latin America and the entire world will be immense, as will those for multilateralism, human rights, international law, and the post-war global order as we know it.
Therefore, we call on all peace-loving peoples, and above all on all those for whom Cuba has been a friend and inspiration for so many years to act now to stand arm-in-arm with Cuba against this unprecedented imperialist aggression.
